  9. New to dance?

    What does Dancenorth do

Dancenorth create, produce and perform new Australian contemporary dance theatre shows for the enjoyment of local, national and international audiences. Under the directorship of Gavin Webber, he creates shows that have a unique highly physical style and these can incorporate the use of film and live music.

What can I expect if I am new to dance-theatre

People who come to experience our shows enjoy and appreciate the athleticism and calibre of our dancing ensemble in addition to being taken on a journey told through movement.

The difference between contemporary dance and other forms of dance is that the meaning behind each show is totally personal and subjective - in that, it can be anything you want it to be. A great example of this is our latest show, Remember Me, which explored the human journey of life using dance, live music, film and theatre. Audience members were moved by different parts of the show and applied their own, individual experiences about what they were seeing.

Subsequently, experiencing a Dancenorth show isn’t about ‘getting it’ and there definately aren’t any pop quizzes afterwards. It is all about enjoying the power of dance and live performance.

How do I buy tickets and where do I collect them?

Tickets for all Dancenorth shows at our venue in Townsville are available online via our safe and secure ‘Book Now’ system and over the phone. Tickets for touring shows are available from the respective venue.

Tickets can be collected one week prior to the performance, or via the box office. The Dancenorth box office is located just inside the foyer and opens one hour prior to the performance time.

What happens if I am late? Is there a seating allocation?

Over twenty staff, including dancers, production staff, directors and guest performers, are involved in all Dancenorth shows. Subsequently, shows do commence at the nominated performance time. If you are running late, the usher will be able to assist you to your seats at a break in the performance to minimise disruption to other patrons.

There is no seating allocation to Dancenorth shows, but there are also no ‘bad seats’ either. With stadium-style seating and a capacity of just under 200 people, you need not be concerned with being the first into the performance space or lining up at the theatre door for twenty minutes prior to the performance time etc. When you arrive to our shows in Townsville, we have a fully functioning bar which is manned by FAME volunteers to ensure that you can relax from the moment you enter our venue. Furthermore, we encourage patrons to stay behind after the performance for drinks with our creative team, including our dancers.
