International Day for People with Disability (2019-2024)

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations-sanctioned day that celebrates the contributions and achievements of people with disability and promotes awareness, understanding and acceptance in our community.
Over six years, Dancenorth engaged and collaborated with various community groups in Gurambilbarra (Townsville) to create an original dance performances and events that celebrated the diversity within our community and share in the joy of dance as a foundation to create connections that enrich and enhance our lives.
International Day for People with Disability 2024
In 2024, Dancenorth collaborated with a group of Townsville Community Learning Centre students to create an original dance performance. This year, the group has been inspired by Dancenorth's Lighting the Dark, a bold new work by Chris Dyke, a Kaurna (Adelaide) based dancer and choreographer living with Down syndrome.
Audiences were transported to Lighting the Dark's revolutionary world by an original dance performance created in collaboration with an enthusiastic, charming and feisty cast of young dancers from Townsville Community Learning Centre. Everyone in the cast and audience was invited to dance on stage after the performance.
