Celebrate International Day of People with Disability 2024 with Dancenorth Australia and Townsville Community Learning Centre.
International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that celebrates the contributions and achievements of people with disability and promotes awareness, understanding and acceptance in our community.
Each year, Dancenorth collaborates with a group of Townsville Community Learning Centre students to create an original dance performance. This year, the group has been inspired by Lighting the Dark, .a bold new work by Chris Dyke a Karuna (Adelaide) based dancer and choreographer living with Down Syndrome. A profound celebration of the human experience, a transcendent journey which traverses individual and universal truths in a dance to the very centre of what it means to be human.
Be transported to this revolutionary world by our new dance performance, created in collaboration with our enthusiastic, charming and feisty cast of young dancers from Townsville Community Learning Centre.

Performance History

Last year, the group worked with the idea of their favourite places and transported their Townsville audience to spaces that promised action, fun, comfort and safety.
In 2022 the performers based their work on Dancenorth’s Wayfinder, creating a vibrant abstraction of joy and resilience. This colourful dance performance was set amongst their own version of Hiromi Tango’s garden.
‘home’, inspired by Dancenorth’s 2021 performance production World Interior – with themes of strength, construction, and heart.
An audience joins us each year to celebrate the diversity within our community and share in the joy of dance as a foundation to creating connections which enrich and enhance our lives.
